OVERVIEW
Midwinter Wild Geese Coffee Set - 1967 British-made Coffee Pot and 4 Cups & Saucers on the Fashion Shape, designed by Sir Peter Scott.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
This is the beautiful “Wild Geese”, designed for Midwinter in 1955 by Peter Scott and produced on the Stylecraft Shape and the subsequent Fashion Shape through to 1967. It was hugely popular upon its release, though coffee sets like this one are now extremely rare and sought after, by both Midwinter collectors, and nature enthusiasts alike.

Each piece in the range featured a slightly different study of these beautiful water birds in blue, grey and brown, with detail of reeds and rushes. This set was produced in December 1967, right at the end of the manufacturing run for this pattern.

All pieces have the beautiful Midwinter Wild Geese backstamp with Peter Scott's printed signature. The coffee pot also bears the datestamp 12-67.

Peter Scott was the only son of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Antarctic explorer, who died on his ill-fated expedition to the South Pole when Peter was only 2 years old. In a heartbreaking letter to his widow Kathleen, Captain Scott, knowing he is about to die, begs her to “make the boy interested in natural history if you can...”.
Peter Scott grew up to be one of the world’s leading naturalists and conservationists, and was much decorated for his unceasing work in protecting birds and wildlife. He sat alongside Jessie Tait in her studio when he painted these stunning designs, each piece slightly different. The incredible legacy of two outstanding British gentlemen.

DIMENSIONS
This is the larger Fashion Shape coffee pot, Midwinter catalogue ref F29, which measures 9"/23cm to the highest point of the handle, and holds approx. 2.5 British pints.
The four cups are standard F9 coffee cups, 2.25"/5.75" tall, 3"/7.6cm diameter
The saucers are standard F10 coffee saucers, measuring 4.75"/12cm in diameter.

CONDITION
All pieces in excellent vintage condition - this set appears to be unused, the transfers are good and the white glaze glossy and bright. There is some age-related fine clean crazing to the coffee pot exterior and two of the saucers. There is a glaze rub to the top of the coffee pot handle (probably from box storage), and a miniscule underglaze nibble to the rim of one cup. See photographs for close up detail of these small flaws.

British made vintage items from Staffordshire.
