Milton Head Pottery Tankard Mugs - Pair of 1950s Black Yellow and Blue Striped Hand Thrown Drinking Steins from Brixham, Devon
Overview:
Milton Head Pottery 1950s Tankard Mugs - Pair of Black Yellow and Blue Striped Hand-Thrown British Drinking Steins Made In Brixham, Devon
Detailed Description:
Two fantastic 1950’s hand thrown and glossily slip decorated tall black tankards. One has blue vertical stripes and yellow interior, the other has yellow stripes and a blue interior. Each has a hand-applied handle and tapers very slightly in at the rim. Wonderfully decorative and evocative of playful 1950’s design.
Dimensions:
Each tankard is approximately 7” / 18cm tall, they have very slightly differing heights.
They are 3” / 7.5cm diameter at base, tapering in slightly to 2.75” / 7cm at rim.
They are quite substantial and the unpacked weight for each tankard is 1.5lbs / 700g.
Each mug bears the Milton Head Pottery backstamp to base.
Manufacturer:
Milton Head Pottery was started in Brixham in Devon in 1950 by Peter Draper the artist and designer, Sidney Higgins who was responsible for the kiln firing and Frank Middlebrook, an ex-serviceman who threw the pottery. It was bought out in 1959 and became Brixham Pottery. These steins were a key product range throughout the 50’s for the successful pottery studio.
Condition:
Although they are sturdily made and thickly glazed with no cracks or obvious chips, the mugs are over 60 years old and their glaze has fine crazing throughout. I would therefore recommend they be used for display rather than containing liquids, and they should be gently hand washed and not exposed to extremes of heat and cold.
The blue is in good shape, there is a rough black patch to one edge of the handle (where you place your thumb), which you can feel rather than see. It could be a previous repair.
The yellow has fared a little worse in its 60-year history - it also has a rough patch to one edge of the handle where you place your thumb, and has definitely had a patch repair there in the past. It also has a rough black patch roughly an inch from the top on the exterior of the mug. This looks like an old attempt at restoration.
So condition is not absolutely perfect, however, when displayed as in picture 1, these flaws are not visible at all, and these beautiful mugs are far too rare and important to be hidden away!
