Vintage Jersey Pottery Trivets - 1960s Round Ceramic Tiles featuring Big Eyed Children's Faces
$28.00
Vintage Jersey Pottery trivets - circular ceramic tile pot stands handpainted with kitsch 1960s wide-eyed children, from the ever-popular British Channel Islands studio pottery business.
Hand-decorated in earthy colours with sweet details on a white background with a black line around the rim. These could be used for their intended purpose as a heat resistant stand for dishes or teapots, but would look amazing displayed on a wall or perhaps used as coasters on a teak coffee table.
There are four trivets to choose from, available to purchase individually at ÂŁ22 each, please select from the dropdown menu.
In overall good condition - there is some fine crazing and gentle heat marking to to the glaze, which does not detract from their lovely appearance, and a little wear and/or a small fleabite to the edges of 3 - see photos.. Each trivet measures 15.2cm diameter (the size of a teaplate) and is backed with green baize. Three are marked "Jersey Pottery C.I."
Jersey Pottery was founded by brothers Charles and Edward Potter who saw an opportunity to manufacture and export “British” pottery following a law introduced during WWII which banned the production of decorative ware in the UK but did not apply to Jersey in Britain’s Channel Islands. Pottery production had ceased in Jersey in the 1880s when the clay from local quarries in St Lawrence was exported in large quantities to Cornwall. The first factory was established on the site of a former ship-building yard close to the sea in Gorey Village.
Taken over by Clive and Jessie Jones in 1955, production expanded to satisfy the growing tourist market, and expanded hugely over the coming decades, to include highly successful catering outlets for the large number of visitors. Still run by the Jones family, Jersey Pottery is more successful than ever, and exports worldwide.
