Striking, rare, Gabriel Fourmaintraux 'Brésil' vase for Desvres, France.
1950s abstract zoomorphic vessel of tripod form, featuring a satin matt white moulded body, hand-decorated in the Brésil decor of mid-century primaries with monochrome ladder-effect detail. The neck of the vase flares out, showing a glossy yellow interior with distinctive aperture feature. The reverse of the vase is plain white.
Vase measures H23cm x W16.5cm x D13cm, unsigned.
Very good vintage condition, glazes are bright and glossy. A few tiny areas of glaze wear to the feet, see photos for enlarged detail.
Gabriel Fourmaintraux (1886-1984) was an influential 20th century French ceramic artist, whose family ran the Desvres pottery for almost 200 years. This vase was manufactured in several sizes and different decors.
